Staying healthy into the new school year

Immunisation is a simple, safe and effective way to protect your family from harmful diseases this holiday season and into 2020. Visit your doctor for general health and vaccination advice.

Immunisation not only protects you and your family but also others in your community, by reducing the spread of preventable diseases.

Children starting school in 2020 must have up-to-date immunisations to enrol.

These vaccinations help protect children from highly infectious and severe diseases including whooping cough and measles.

Travel health

If you’re travelling overseas during the school holidays, you may need vaccinations or medication – both for general health protection and for region-specific diseases.

If you’re travelling to the Northern Hemisphere, you may even need a flu shot.

NSW schools respond to bushfires

Many schools are responding to the catastrophic fire rating that is affecting communities across the state this week.

We are continuously updating the School safety page with a list of government and non-government schools, as well as TAFE NSW campuses that are currently non-operational.

While some schools are temporarily non-operational due to localised fires, many others in high-risk areas are non-operational as a precautionary measure.

Schools in some areas are being used as emergency evacuation centres at the direction of the Rural Fire Service.

For schools that are currently operational, school pickups and dropoffs will continue as usual. If your school is currently non-operational, it will likely remain so tomorrow.

Large scale distressing events affect our school communities in many ways. Headspace’s mental health support resource (PDF 100.52KB) is available to help students, teachers and school staff respond to the bushfires.

Visit the School safety page for updates. The department’s Facebook and Twitter accounts will also provide updates during this period.

This Australian Reading Hour, encourage your child to discover or rekindle their love of a good book. Take the time to learn, escape and relax on Thursday 19 September and read for one hour.

Get involved at home

Join in at home and read your child a bedtime story. Studies show that reading a bedtime story six days a week can give kids almost a year’s head start when they begin school. Reading has also been shown to develop empathy, promote critical thinking and help children find a sense of self.

Join in from the classroom

Bestselling children’s author and illustrator Matt Stanton will broadcast live to primary school children across the country from the Sydney Opera House on Tuesday 17 September. We invite schools to register for the livestream of this free event.

Stanton’s author talk is among more than 140 events happening across the country involving more than 50 authors.

Take the Book Swap Challenge

We all have favourite books that we come back to again and again.

To help celebrate Reading Hour take our Book Swap Challenge. We want students, teachers, staff and parents to try reading something new on the day. To get involved, simply pair up with someone and swap your favourite books.

Take a photo and tag it with #ReadingHour so we can see how you got involved.

Video – #ReadingHour authors talk about their favourite place to read

Duration: 0:38

Looking for a good spot to open a book? We asked authors Benjamin Law, Morris Gleitzman, Jacqueline Harvey and Mick Elliott about their favourite place to read.

The Game Changer Challenge is back

It’s not too late to become a Game Changer with applications for the Education Week challenge due by 7 June.

The Game Changer Challenge brings 16 teams from public schools across NSW – eight from primary and eight from secondary – to Sydney during Education Week in August for a three-day, intensive design-thinking workshop.

The Game Changer workshops, which start on Tuesday 6 August, includes teacher training in the use of design thinking as a teaching methodology and its application for school planning.

It also includes a team competition where schools will work under the guidance of experts from industry and academia to develop a solution to this year’s critical question: How might we humanise technology?

Department of Education Secretary Mark Scott has encouraged students and teachers to get behind the event as it highlights the critical thinking students will need to develop to succeed in the future.

“The Game Changer Challenge is an exciting initiative that helps educate and inform our students and teachers on how to integrate the problem-solving methodology of design thinking into the classroom,” Mr Scott says.

“It embraces the 21st century skills our students will need to thrive in a globalised world such as collaboration, creative thinking and communication.

“This is a wonderful opportunity for our students at all levels to be involved in discussing and addressing a real-world issue that will affect their future lives. I encourage every school to get involved.”

The challenge is designed to make strong learning and teaching connections to the NSW syllabus specifically in the area of developing general capabilities such as critical thinking, collaboration, creativity, communication and problem-solving.

The challenge also provides teachers with an opportunity to gain exposure to the design thinking process and includes teacher resources to introduce this creative problem-solving methodology into the classroom.

Finalists will be selected based on a 60-second video that showcases your team’s vision around the question of humanising technology.

For more information email edweek@det.nsw.edu.au or visit the Game Changer Challenge page.

The National Assessment Program – Literacy and Numeracy (NAPLAN) is a point in time assessment for students in Years 3, 5, 7 and 9. The tests assess the foundational skills in reading, writing, spelling and numeracy that are essential for every child to progress through school and life.

This year NAPLAN takes place between 14 and 16 May for paper tests and between 14 and 24 May for schools participating in NAPLAN Online.

NAPLAN data is used to help monitor student progress over time against a national measure and to identify areas of strength and improvement. It is used in combination with other school assessments to guide and support student learning.

Watch students ask an expert the tough questions about NAPLAN.

Bring back memories, not measles

With school holidays just around the corner, it’s time to visit your doctor to check that you and your family are fully protected against measles, before you travel overseas.

Measles is a serious, highly contagious, viral illness that is easily spread through the air when an infectious person coughs, sneezes or breathes. If you and your family are not fully vaccinated, or have never been vaccinated, you are at risk of contracting measles.

Not sure if you’re fully protected?

In Australia, the measles vaccine (MMR) consists of 2 doses. If you’re not sure whether you’ve had 2 doses of the measles vaccine, visit your doctor. It’s safe to receive another dose.

Children born in Australia

If your children were born in Australia, they may have received the measles vaccine at 12 months old and the second dose at 18 months, in accordance with the National Immunisation Program.

If you have a baby under 12 months old, consult your doctor about getting their measles vaccination.

Adults born in Australia

Born before 1966 – you were most likely exposed to measles as a child and are generally considered to be immune. If in doubt, ask your GP.

Born between 1966 and 1994 – you may not have received 2 doses. Talk to your doctor about the free vaccine if you’re unsure.

Born after 1994 – the National Immunisation Program offers 2 doses, and you can check your vaccination status using the Australian Immunisation Register.

For more information about the measles vaccination, visit NSW Health or consult your local doctor.

5 road safety tips for parents and carers

Now that students are back to school after a break it’s a good time to chat with your child about safe behaviours when you walk or commute to school.

Here are our top tips to help our students make a safe trip:

1. Be alert and aware

Take note of the dangers you come across on your walk and bring them to your child’s attention. Point out dangers, such as vehicles coming out of driveways. Talk to your child about being alert in a road environment.

2. Hold hands

When on the footpath, at a crossing or in a car park always hold your child's hand. It is advised to do this up to the age of at least 8 years old and closely supervise until at least the age of 10.

3. Choose a safe crossing

Lead by example and choose a safe place to cross the road. Explain why it is the safest place to cross.

4. Set a good example

Your child watches everything you do, so if you cross at the crossing they will too. It is also important to share these messages with other carers who may walk with your child to school.

5. Stop, Look, Listen, Think every time you cross the road

Discuss this important road safety message. STOP! one step back from the kerb. LOOK! continuously both ways. LISTEN! for the sounds of approaching traffic. THINK! whether it is safe to cross.

Practise makes perfect

The more supervised practice your child can get the better, so why not make Term 1 the start of a new routine to walk with your child to school more often.

Older children may be ready to make the journey to school independently. Before they take this step, observe if they are road safe and reinforce the road safety messages.

For more information, check out the department’s pedestrian safety advice for students, parents and carers.

2019 school budget allocations

Like all NSW public schools, this week we will receive a School Budget Allocation Report with our funding for 2019. The report will help us manage our total budget delivered through the Resource Allocation Model (RAM).

The RAM supports schools through needs-based funding to ensure a fair, efficient and transparent allocation of funds. Our school has the flexibility to make local decisions based on the specific needs of our students.

We will use our 2019 funding to support students and improve educational outcomes. The school executive will continue to work with the school community as we implement the school plan using this needs-based funding.

Premier highlights the value of public education

Kiama and Parramatta public schools hosted the launch of Education Week today.

The Premier, Gladys Berejiklian, with (from left): Education Minister Rob Stokes; State Member for Parramatta, Geoff Lee; Department of Education Secretary Mark Scott; student performers and comperes, and the Principal of Parramatta Public School, Gail Charlier (far right).

Public education can be the springboard to the top job in New South Wales.

That was the message from the Premier, Gladys Berejiklian, as she launched Education Weekcelebrations today at Parramatta and Kiama public schools.

"I know that all schools across the state today are highlighting and celebrating what we all value in public education – where someone like me who couldn't speak a word of English when she started school has somehow ended up being the Premier of NSW," she said.

Ms Berejiklian said she had met many possible future leaders during her visit to Parramatta Public School and "couldn't be prouder, as your Premier, to witness the outstanding achievements of all the students across the state".

The dual school launch, linked via a live simulcast, focused on the theme of Education Week, Today's schools – creating tomorrow's world, which highlights how NSW public schools are equipping young people with the skills and capabilities they need to thrive in a rapidly changing world.

For the first time the launch was hosted entirely by primary school students and featured student performances from Eastwood Public School violinist Justine Zhang, Bossley Park High School soloist Ezra Loau and dancers from Hoxton Park Public School.

Year 8 students from Kiama High School – Alira Morgan, Jannali Morgan and Olivia Talbott – opened the celebration with an Acknowledgement of Country performed in language.

Keynote speeches were delivered from Kiama by Terara Public School Year 6 student Lucy Boundy, Molly Chapman, a Year 8 student at Dapto High School, and Nowra East Public School instructional leader Vishanti Govender.

Lucy told the launch that education was about opportunity: "Opportunity to learn, opportunity to improve and opportunity to make a difference."

In detailing her early struggles with learning, Molly said a more hands-on approach to study at her high school had a huge impact on her.

"I learn more effectively by seeing and doing things because it gets in my head more easily and pictures are worth a thousand words. Thanks to school, I'm exceeding in almost everything I touch," she said.

Education Minister Rob Stokes highlighted the "incredible legacy" of public schools on society, a role contemporary education and educators would play in the future.

"We are in a period of vast technological, social and economic change, and with that the role of education becomes more important, even bigger, and the challenge for teachers and students becomes more complex," he said.

"We need to provide training in those skills that recognise the future is uncertain and to train and encourage young people not just to be ready for the change that is coming but to be excited by it."

Education Week 2018 - Today's schools creating tomorrow's world

The future of education will be showcased in NSW public schools from August 6 – 10 as students, teachers <g class="gr_ gr_31 gr-alert gr_gramm gr_inline_cards gr_run_anim Punctuation only-ins replaceWithoutSep" id="31" data-gr-id="31">and</g> parents across the state celebrate Education Week 2018.

Education Week kicks off on Monday, August 6, with a simultaneous launch at Parramatta and Kiama public schools <g class="gr_ gr_29 gr-alert gr_spell gr_inline_cards gr_run_anim ContextualSpelling ins-del multiReplace" id="29" data-gr-id="29">livestreamed</g> on YouTube so all government schools and their communities can join in.

This year's theme, Today's schools – creating tomorrow's world, highlights how NSW public schools are equipping young people with the skills and capabilities they need to thrive in a rapidly changing world.

For the first <g class="gr_ gr_30 gr-alert gr_gramm gr_inline_cards gr_run_anim Punctuation only-ins replaceWithoutSep" id="30" data-gr-id="30">time</g> the Education Week launch will be hosted by primary school students and will feature a dancing robot, student performances and a film highlighting how schools are working with their communities to solve real-world problems.

A highlight of the week is the Game Changer Challenge, in which 16 teams of students from schools across NSW will compete in a three-day design program, working alongside leading industry professionals to create the school of the future.

Premier Gladys Berejiklian said today's students were learning at a time of great change.

"From the far west to our metropolitan hubs and everywhere in between, our state's schools will celebrate not only what we've achieved, but the future we are creating," <g class="gr_ gr_32 gr-alert gr_gramm gr_inline_cards gr_run_anim Punctuation only-ins replaceWithoutSep" id="32" data-gr-id="32">Ms</g> Berejiklian said.

"We are living in a time when the traditional walls of the classroom are opening up to new worlds of learning, paving the way for students to connect and collaborate with their peers regionally and globally."

Education Minister Rob Stokes said there had never been a more exciting time to be involved in schools with technology reshaping the way students learn and billions of dollars being invested in new school infrastructure.

"The NSW Department of Education is continually striving for improvement and innovation so that the young people in our care learn in a world-class education system," <g class="gr_ gr_37 gr-alert gr_gramm gr_inline_cards gr_run_anim Punctuation only-ins replaceWithoutSep" id="37" data-gr-id="37">Mr</g> Stokes said.

"The NSW Government is supporting that vision through a record $6 billion in funding to build the classrooms and schools of the future."

The Secretary of the Department of Education Mark Scott said ensuring today's students had the skills they would need to "not just survive, but thrive" in the future underpinned the department's evidence-based approach to learning.

"I am incredibly proud of the innovative teaching and learning that is being done across our State's public schools to ensure that every student can perform to their full potential," <g class="gr_ gr_34 gr-alert gr_gramm gr_inline_cards gr_run_anim Punctuation only-ins replaceWithoutSep" id="34" data-gr-id="34">Mr</g> Scott said.

"We don't know what the future will hold, but we do know that we are focused on equipping today's students with the skills and knowledge they will need to lead fulfilling lives in the future."

New uniform policy for NSW public schools

A new uniform policy has been introduced for NSW public schools, which for the first time include the option for girls to wear shorts and pants.

The Premier, Gladys Berejiklian, and the Minister for Education, Rob Stokes, announced the new "clear and concise" policy today at Condell Park Public School in Sydney.

<g class="gr_ gr_17 gr-alert gr_gramm gr_inline_cards gr_run_anim Punctuation only-ins replaceWithoutSep" id="17" data-gr-id="17">Ms</g> Berejiklian said the "modern makeover" would ensure that uniforms were practical and comfortable for students and affordable for parents.

The new policy says all students should have the opportunity to access the full range of school activities while wearing a school uniform, including physical activities, and girls must have the option to wear shorts and pants.

For more information, read the media release by the Premier and Minister. The new policy and implementation guidelines (PDF 116.83KB) are available on the department's website.

The Department of Education supports the wearing of school uniform to promote a sense of belonging for students and create a positive identity for the school community.

Each public school decides on its school uniform in formal consultation with students, school staff, parents and the school community.

Taking the bait and luring the local kids

What better way to spend a day of the holidays than going fishing with the local constabulary. This week sixteen students from Tea Gardens, Karuah and Stroud Public School took up the task of catching more fish than the police in the inaugural challenge. The kids succeeded in the encounter with Tyler Rodgers of Tea Gardens Public School catching a flathead. Tyler was happy with his catch but was more than happy to return the flathead back home. A Tea Gardens Public School supporter also pulled in a brim extending the lead. But the number of fish caught was not the main focus; at the core of the initiative is the building of positive relationships between the police and local students early in life. Joining the students for the day were police from Karuah, Stroud and Tea Gardens. The police spent a significant amount of their time assisting the students with baiting up and casting out. Karuah Police Constable Trent Moffat also showed off his skill at sculpting numerous sea based creatures in the sand much to the delight of the kids.

The day was capped off with a BBQ lunch cooked by the boys in blue on location with Senior Constable Brad Smith from Stroud Police station happy to cook up a storm. On the menu were sausage sandwiches and also pipis for those who were a little more adventurous.

Senior Constable Dave Coyle from Tea Gardens Police was thrilled with the success of this fishing event and the close connections built with students within the local community.

"Cops v kids fishing challenge was an idea between principal, Mark Clemson and myself to have a day with the kids. I try and work closely with the school through visits and coaching football and this was just another avenue to get together. We were blessed with great weather and a great bunch of kids."

"If you have heard that the kids won the day by ‘out fishing' us, I have no comment. But seriously it was day that I hope the kids enjoyed. Days like this don't just happen. I would need to thank Brad from Stroud Police and Trent from Karuah Police and the crew from Marlin bait and tackle Tea Gardens for helping on the day."

Senior Constable Coyle will be back at Tea Gardens Public School assisting with the coaching of the school rugby league team as they prepare to take on other local schools in the Knights Knockout on Thursday 4 May, a role that he has undertaken annually for many years.

Grandparents Everywhere!

A Grand Welcome back!

One of the very exciting events within the Tea Gardens School calendar is the annual Grandparents Day. Grandparents come from far and wide to share in and connect with their grandchildren at a special school assembly. This year approximately 200 grandparents and grand "friends" were enthralled and entertained by each class who took to the stage performing a range of items including dances, songs and skits.

Principal Mark Clemson highlighted the important role grandparents have in the lives of their grandchildren. Throughout his welcoming address, he acknowledged that grandparents really do make the difference to the lives of their grandkids, noting that "as parents we couldn't do it without the ongoing support from the grandparents."

The amazing assembly was followed by an opportunity for grandparents to go to the classrooms where they had a chance to see firsthand the quality work being undertaken in the school. Afterwards, our grandparents enjoyed a morning tea lovingly prepared by many parents within our school community.

Lois Wyse once said "Grandchildren are the dots that connect the lines from generation to generation." We are very fortunate to have so many loving and caring grandparents willing to make the journey to our school each year to connect with their grandchildren.

Rugby League - 2016

Tea Gardens Public School played in the annual Newcastle Knights Rugby League Knockout last Thursday achieving some very pleasing results including:

A draw against Greta PS 4-4

A loss against Marks Point PS 4-0

A draw against Beresfield PS 8-8

A win against Mayfield East PS 8-4

A win against Wiripaang PS 16-8

Coaching of the team was again shared between Senior Constable David Coyle, Mark Clemson and local guru Col McCarthy.

"The results achieved this year exceeded our expectations. Our teams are getting better year after year." Principal Clemson said. "To say I'm proud of our boys and girls is an understatement- I'm thrilled how they performed".

Tea Garden's progression in the knockout came down to the last preliminary match of the day. A draw in the game between Beresfield and Greta would have been enough to see our local team through to the quarter finals. Unfortunately, this was not meant to be with Greta PS being victorious and progressing through. Regardless, the kids had an awesome time staying true to the old adage that it doesn't matter whether you win or lose as long as you do your best and are having fun.

The young leaders got to meet and listen to inspirational young people including Scott Tweedie (TV Host), Leticia Letini (Google Event Manager), Rebecca Morlands, Nathan Want and Ben Austin (Paralympian). According to those in attendance, ‘it was an experience of a lifetime meeting such inspirational people, who held everything from high-powered jobs to Paralympian, to ladies who made and sold chocolate and had a cat café.'

NAPLAN Growth

Tea Gardens Public School students have performed well in the last round of NAPLAN testing, achieving above average gains in numeracy and aspects of literacy in the areas of reading and spelling.

Mark Clemson, school principal praised the collective efforts of students and staff for the results. "It's great to see the hard work starting to pay off. These results are fantastic for the school and community as a whole."

Mr Clemson said that the school has had an ongoing focus on striving for excellence in student learning and school culture. In addition, the school has been targeting an ongoing commitment to build teacher capacity through professional learning and building authentic quality relationships with the community. "Ultimately it's about improving teacher capacity through ongoing professional learning and getting the foundations for learning right." Mr Clemson said this was being achieved at Tea Gardens by embedding all the different syllabus documents and the creation of a quality learning program at the school with programs like Targeted Early Numeracy (TEN), Language Learning and Literacy (L3), Reading Recovery, Focus on Reading (FoR) and Making Up Lost Time with Literacy (MULTILIT).

Tea Gardens Public School has engaged additional staff in 2016 to maintain this focus on building teacher capacity. Mrs Booth has been employed as the school Teaching and Learning coordinator to develop and build on the skills of staff through modelled teaching, providing feedback and suggestions to improve future teaching and learning.

In any school, the core focus is on improving student learning outcomes and here at Tea Gardens, we are no different.

"I want more, I strive for more from our staff – we need to have high expectations for our students and for our school. Our ultimate goal needs to be that we as a school community are able to achieve above average gains consistently and strive for excellence across all areas of schooling," Mark Clemson said.

"We are creating our future day after day."

Grand Parents Day 2016

On Friday 4th March, the students of Tea Gardens Public School celebrated and paid tribute to their grandparents and grand-friends. Around 250 grandparents and friends were treated to a wonderfully grand assembly which included skits, raps, songs and dances. During the assembly, Mr Clemson, the school principal, addressed the crowd, recalling events from his father's youth with his grandparents and declaring the importance of sharing family history with the grandchildren, so that it may be passed on to future generations.

Mr Clemson noted that "Stories of the past shape who we are. Shape our identity. Stories that you tell your kids and grandkids are vital; they connect us not only with the past and present but also our future." He also had a special message for the students in the audience "Children, spend time with your grandparents. Listen to the stories, learn from them. Share time with them. Love them."

Following the entertainment, grandparents and friends were invited to visit the classrooms and share in the learning experiences of their grandchildren. It also gave them an opportunity to see work on display, bookwork and discuss with the students what school was like for them.

Following the open classrooms, the grandparents and friends were treated to a light luncheon, provided with the support of the canteen volunteers.

Thank you to all the grandparents and friends who travelled from far and wide, to share in the education of their grandchildren and special friends.

Tea Gardens Art and Craft Expo

This year sees the Tea Gardens Public School hold its 39th Annual Easter Art and Craft expo. The expo draws exhibits from well-known Australian artists, as well as local artists, including Galleries in the Gardens and artists from all over NSW.

Excitement is building. Instead of just one feature artist, Tea Gardens Public School will welcome two artists, Freda Surgenor and Rachel Syron to the stage over the weekend. Freda Surgenor is a well-known, multi award winning, realist artist who produces works with sensitivity and radiant colour. Our local feature artist, Rachel Syron, produces stunning Aboriginal art, will also share the limelight.

An abundance of beautiful craft work, including hand knits, dolls clothes, sculptures, cards and much, much more will also be available. Plenty of craft activities at a minimal fee will be offered to entertain the children while you browse around.

Proceeds each year from this major fundraising event for the Tea Gardens Public School P&C Association, contribute to providing and upgrading facilities at the school. Just over $14,000 was raised last year, enabling the P & C Association to raise the remaining money required to fund the installation of new fixed play equipment. The students are really excited by the prospect of having new climbing equipment, which is due to be installed during May this year. Funds raised in 2016 from the expo will go toward the replacement of aging air conditioners across site.

The Art and Craft Expo runs from 6:30pm Thursday 24th March until 3:00pm Monday 28th March 2016.

The opening night is a highlight of the weekend and for just $20 per ticket (18 years and over) you can not only appreciate the wonderful art and craft, but also listen to great local talent, which includes live music by Carly Jacobsen and Tanya Keys. Plus indulge in finger food and a glass of bubbly on entry. Wine and beer can be purchased for sale throughout the evening. There will be an auction of artworks produced by each class at the school, as well as prizes kindly donated by local and Port Stephens business houses.

The exhibition is open daily from Friday to Sunday between 9:00am-5:00pm and Monday between 9:00am-3:00pm. Entry is $2, with children under 12 free. Devonshire tea and coffee will be available throughout the day. This year our major raffle artwork is a beautiful ink and watercolour drawing by Cynthia Hundleby, depicting, with an accurate eye, the Boatshed at Tea Gardens- a truly iconic landmark in our locality.

All of our students will also have their individual, original artworks for sale at $5. So why not come along and support our wonderful school. We look forward to seeing you sometime over Easter.

Our kindergarten teachers were very keen to be trained, and both Mrs Andrews and Mrs Booth have enjoyed sharing the developmental success of their students with parents and their colleagues, since its inception last year.

The L3 Program has been so successful, that we have extended the program to Year One students and staff this year- achieving outstanding results.

Our Kindergarten to Year Two staff are also trained in the latest numeracy teaching techniques, and are using the TEN (Targeting Early Numeracy) Program, within their classrooms. This program, like L3, supports all students in becoming successful mathematicians, with students working in small tailored groups to build mental skills and knowledge when working mathematically. This program encourages practical skills that are related to everyday problems encountered by students.

Tea Gardens Public School is looking forward to continuing and extending these successful programs even further in the future. Both these programs support the Best Start initiatives that have been embedded into our school programs for the past six years.

The school is now enrolling students for the 2016 Kindergarten intake. Parents are most welcome to contact the school office for an enrolment package on 49970286 or make an appointment to learn more about these wonderful programs.

Books Light Up Our World

Tea Gardens Public School students and staff went all out showcasing how "Books Light up Our World" celebrating book week, dressing up as their favourite book characters.

The day, organised by the school's librarian Rachel Cooper, with the help of her dedicated committee, was an enormous success, with students embracing the event with enthusiasm.

The students were eager participants on the day, with many spending the last few nights busily preparing their outfits. "It was great to see the kids so enthusiastic about dressing up and excited about the day," Ms Cooper said.

"Paddington, Spiderman, Dorothy and the Cat in the Hat were just some of the many stars in our parade. the children and the parents did a marvellous job as did local organisations like St Vinnie's who assisted many kids with last minute costume additions."

Tea Gardens / Hawks Nest Pre School came to the parade and afterwards participated in some shared reading with Kindergarten and Year 3 / 4 students. "This provided a fantastic opportunity for the students at the school to read to the pre-schoolers and build a connection in preparation for many of these littlies coming to 'big school' next year."

Throughout the rest of the day in keeping with the theme that "Books Light Up Our World", the Tea Gardens students learnt about light through a variety of science experiments including constructing light mazes, making rainbows using prisms and creating their own lava lamps. In addition, they used technology to design book covers, made lanterns, put themselves into a book, dramatized some of the short-listed books and artistically designed some of their own light bulbs. Ms Cooper said one of the most important aspects of the day was a focus on literacy and learning, a fact certainly highlighted by the variety of activities undertaken.

During the week, funds were also raised to support the Indigenous Literacy Foundation as part of the Great Aussie Book Swap. in excess of $120 was raised to support the purchase of books for students in remote Indigenous communities.

A presentation was also given by Tea gardens Public library officer, Carol Johnson to promote the services available at the local library.

From cover to cover, it is a day that will be remembered fondly for a long time.
